Ultrasound-guided injections into joints, around tendon, nerves and ligaments offer several advantages over traditional, landmarked guided injections.
- Precision: Ultrasound allows the clinician to see the joints and surrounding structures accurately, which helps ensure the needle is placed accurately into the intended location within the joint. This improves the overall effectiveness of the injection and reduces the risk of complications.
- Safety: By seeing the needle position, ultrasound guided injections help avoid accidental damage to nearby structures such as blood vessels or nerves, which then reduces the risk of injury or unwanted side effects.
- Increase success rate: By confirming the proper position of the needle, it allows the user to deliver the medication precisely to the intended target which has been shown to improve results.
- Improved patient comfort: Because ultrasound guided injections are more accurate, they require fewer attempts, reducing discomfort and anxiety for the patients.
- Improved patient satisfaction: Patients report greater satisfaction with an ultrasound guided procedure because they have greater confidence the injection was delivered in the right place.
All injections performed at the Midlands Joint Injection Clinic will be ultrasound guided. Initially, I will take a history and examine the patient before using the ultrasound scanner to assist in the diagnosis. If it is decided that an injection is appropriate, this will be done with the use of the ultrasound scanner.
