Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body and is found in various tissues and fluids, particularly in the joints and skin. It plays an especially important role in lubricating joints.
Hyaluronic acid is often used in the treatment of joint problems, particularly osteoarthritis. Injections of hyaluronic acid into the joint work by supplementing the natural synovial fluid, providing lubrication and therefore reducing pain associated with osteoarthritis.
While it is more commonly used for joint problems, hyaluronic acid has also been researched in the treatment for certain tendon issues. Some studies have investigated its potential benefits for conditions like tennis elbow, golfers elbow and trochanteric bursitis, where injections may contribute to improved tissue healing and reduced inflammation.
However, the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid can vary among individuals, and its use may depend on the specific nature and severity of the joint or tendon problem.
If this is an option you would like to consider, the appropriateness can be discussed during the initial consultation.
Within a joint, there is the natural synovial fluid which contains hyaluronic acid and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. In osteoarthritis, there is less of the natural hyaluronic acid (HA) in the joint. The cartilage also wears down resulting in pain and stiffness in the joint. Injecting HA helps restore the natural lubricating properties of the synovial fluid, reduces friction which then improves joint function. HA may also have a mild anti-inflammatory effect and stimulate the development of bone growth.
HA injections have been shown to be effective in managing pain from osteoarthritis affecting the knee, hip, ankle, and thumb joints.
Following a HA injection, patients can experience increased pain and discomfort within the joint for the first 2 weeks. This usually settles down. Improvement in pain usually takes 4-6 weeks and last up to 6 months.
