A new innovative treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee is now available called Arthrosamid. Inflammation is regarded as one of the main causes of knee pain with knee osteoarthritis. A single treatment with 6mls dose of Arthrosamid can be injected into the joint space to cushion the knee. It also becomes embedded in the synovial lining of the knee, improving pain and mobility in a few weeks.
Arthrosamid is a hydrogel, consists of 97.5% water and 2.5% polyacrylamide. It is not broken down in the joint, meaning the potential for more sustained pain relief. Clinical data currently demonstrates continued relief out to 3 years
It is indicated for those patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee joint or an effective alternative for those wishing to delay surgical intervention, are too young for surgery or are unable to undergo a surgical procedure.
If interested, please call or email. I will discuss this option with you and if suitable, can discuss the process involved in administering this implant under ultrasound guidance.
Arthrosamid is currently licenced for use in osteoarthritis of the knee joint although is has been successful used for hip osteoarthritis. It involves the injection of 6mls of a hydrogel into the joint in a similar way to steroids or hyaluronic acid. The hydrogel cannot be broken down by the body and instead is incorporated into the synovial lining in the joint. It helps to reduce the inflammation within the joint which then helps with pain.
Arthrosamid® is injected into the intra-articular space as a minimally invasive, out-patient procedure. You do not need to stay in hospital for treatment. In clinical trials, patients reported a reduction in their pain levels by week 4 after their injection. The reduction in pain was sustained over 156 weeks.
